Hello, welcome to our booking site! We provide opportunities for anyone inspired to play with clay, from complete beginners to practising artists.

We'll pop some useful information below for you:

PAYMENT

Online payments are made using PayPal. If you'd prefer to pay via bank transfer please use the code BANKTRANSFER at checkout and follow the instructions at the bottom of the booking page.

If you're paying by gift voucher, please use the code that is written on your voucher, this usually begins with GV.

PRIVATE BOOKINGS

The cost of each session is set to one person as a default, please make sure to tick the box to add any extra participants that you'd like to join you. If you'd like to come back to decorate the work you create, tick the 'decorating session' box too.

MEMBERS ACCESS

Our workshop is opened weekly by our wonderful team of volunteers so that our members can access our facilities. Whether you’d just like access to our kilns, pop in to use our wheels or purchase materials, we have the perfect membership for you. View our membership options here.

Pinched Pumpkins

It’s almost the season of trick or treating - why not treat yourself to a space in this hand building workshop where you can pinch your very own pumpkin (not out of someone’s garden, but out of a ball of clay!).

This class will run on the 01/10/23 between 10:00 - 13:00.

Porcelain Cottages

Make a group of little porcelain cottages that can house tea lights to
create a cosy atmosphere in your home.

For the first time, we'll be using porcelain clay for this class. Durable, crisp white and beautifully translucent, porcelain is a very special clay that everyone should have an opportunity to use.

Handbuilding Jugs, Pitchers & Carafe’s (beginner)

3 hours @ £50.00

It’s finally the season of sunshine, smoothies and sangria – add a splash of style to your summer events by joining us to make your own jug/pitcher/carafe! During the class you’ll be taught a variety of handbuilding techniques including pinching, coiling and using slabs. The class is suitable for all abilities and you’ll be supported every step of the way to create your desired vessel. All materials, tuition and firings are included in the price. Weekend Brunch (beginner)

What's for brunch? Whatever it is, it'll taste 10x better on a handmade brunch set! Join ceramicist Steph Liddle to make your own handbuilt brunch set with a plate and mug. You'll have the opportunity to design your ideal set based on your brunch preferences, and will learn how to use slab-building to make it a reality.

Suitable for beginners.

Techniques covered: slab-building (combined with other hand-building techniques where appropriate)

Splashback Tiles

2 hours 30 minutes @ £60.00

In this workshop artist Maria Howard will show you how to make your own set of splashback tiles for a kitchen, bathroom or studio. Participants will roll out thin slabs and cut them into square or rectangle tiles. They will then decorate them using techniques such as painting, sgraffito and slip trailing, to create a repeating pattern or an overarching design or a tiled mural.

Alternative Ornaments

In this workshop artist Maria Howard will guide you through the process of making a set of alternative ornaments. We will be rolling out slabs of clay and cutting out shapes inspired by animals and other motifs not traditionally associated with christmas. Participants will decorate their ornaments with coloured slip and DCW staff will add the final layer of transparent glaze to ensure they shine for years to come.

Illuminate your home during cold winter nights with your very own set of handmade tea light holders!

Beginner Wheel Throwing Taster Session

Dive headfirst (or more like hands first!) into the art of wheel throwing with tutor Akiko Matsuda! This 4hr intensive course has been designed for complete beginners so absolutely no prior experience is necessary. Make sure to wear some clothes you don't mind getting messy, roll up your sleeves and get ready to learn the basics of wheel throwing.

Character Sculpting and Latex Mask Making (Tuesday's)

Ever wondered how they made the shark in Jaws? Or how they made Darth Vader’s helmet in Star Wars? And how did they make those dinosaurs look so real in Jurassic Park? Keith will take you through the step-by-step process of making your very own wearable character mask; using the same methods and techniques used to create some of your favourite and most memorable movie characters and effects. Intermediate Wheel Throwing with George Buchan | Block 8 | Monday's from 06/11 - 18/12 between 18:00 - 20:00

12 hours @ £235.00

Intermediate Wheel Throwing is aimed at those who already know the basics of throwing and are ready to take their skills to the next level. Through research, design and experimentation, this course will focus on the techniques required to be able to create specific vessels such as bottle shapes, large plates, bowls and jugs.

Block - Monday's from 06/11 - 18/12 between 18:00 - 20:00 (skips weeks of 11/12 to allow work to dry)

Wheel Throwing with Sophia Lappe

2 hours @ £96.00

Learn the basics of wheel throwing, or build upon previous learning, through a guided workshop with one of our talented tutors. Centering clay, coning up and pulling walls are all skills that you will learn during this session.

The cost of the session includes all tuition and materials to create your pots. Once they've dried they'll be bisque fired in our kiln.

Once your pots have been bisque fired you can book one of our decorating sessions to paint and glaze your creations!

Hand Building with Judith Davies

2 hours @ £94.00

Learn traditional hand-building techniques though a guided workshop with one of our talented tutors. Techniques such as coiling, slab building and pinch pots can be explored to create functional items, or ornamental sculptures.

Combined Wheel Throwing & Handbuilding with Sophia Lappe

2 hours @ £108.00

Not sure if wheel throwing or hand building is the technique for you? Why not try both? During this session you get the best of both worlds, learning basic hand building and wheel throwing techniques to create some pots. From centering clay and pulling walls.The cost of the session includes all tuition and materials to create your pots. Once they've dried they'll be bisque fired in our kiln.

Once your pots have been bisque fired you can book one of our decorating sessions to paint and glaze your creation

Wheel Throwing with Rachel Corr

This class will cover:
- Possible outcomes
- Troubleshooting
- Application
- Glaze types
- Reactions
- Glaze temperatures

The class will be divided into two sessions:

Session 1 - This will cover all of the topics listed above. We'll also glaze some test tiles (premade using either our/your own clay)
Session 2 - We'll go over the results of the test tiles together.

If you have a project/particular range of glazes that you're working on, please complete the 'Tell Us More' section when booking.

Health & Safety Induction

30 minutes

You've become a member and you're ready to come in and play with clay, all that's left to do is sign up for a Health & Safety Induction with our technician! We'll show you around the building and go through safety procedures, explain the process of having work fired and give you some info on what to do when you come in. Bring a notepad or make notes on a device, and feel free to come with any questions you may have. We can't wait to meet you!

30 minutes

You've applied to become one of our volunteers and you're a total superstar! We'll meet to go over workshop Health & Safety procedures, give you a tour of the building and provide you with all the information that you'll need to know to open the space to our members.
